This Thanksgiving-themed Synthesis Prompt (PDF) uses cartoons only to encourage students to develop their argument without the temptation of summarizing the sources. It's also an accessible prompt for an introduction or fun activity before Thanksgiving break. This has been updated in November 2021 with even better images!
Other possible ideas for use:
- Post each source around the room and have students participate in a silent gallery walk using post-it notes to make connections between sources or comment on the author's purpose/message/rhetorical strategies.
- Allow students to preview the prompt, answering the prompt with their own answer first, and then provide them with the sources. This encourages students to build off of their own argument rather than relying on the arguments made within the sources.
- Do a Socratic Seminar where students walk through the prompt together and discuss possible claims and evidence.
